For a first-time registration, renewal, ownership transfer, plate transfer, or registration information update, the filing generally should be made with the appropriate county clerk. Required documents may include:

• The current Kentucky certificate of registration, if available;
• Proof of Kentucky insurance;
• The vehicle title, assigned title, or bill of sale;
• A sheriff’s inspection for a vehicle brought into Kentucky from another state;

The online renewal system should not be used to complete a transaction when the displayed information is incorrect. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet directs the registrant to cancel the transaction and contact the local county clerk instead.

Kentucky Name Changes And Title-Linked Corrections

A legal name change may require updates to both the registration and title records. The name presented for the vehicle transaction should correspond with the current legal name shown on identification and supporting documents.

When the name on a title differs from the name on identification, Kentucky requires an affidavit showing that the names refer to the same person. A marriage license or divorce decree may serve as supporting documentation.

Title-linked updates require filing with the county clerk rather than treating the matter as a registration-only change. Correcting Incorrect Information On A Kentucky Registration Record

The correction process depends on the record containing the error:

A registration record error should be reported to the county clerk before renewal or transfer. If incorrect information appears during online renewal, the transaction should be canceled, and the county clerk should be contacted.

For a title or title-linked correction, the county clerk may require a completed title application and additional proof. Title and registration information should not be altered informally; the county clerk determines the documents required for the correction and submits the transaction through the state process.

Kentucky’s registration system also distinguishes plate transfers from ownership transfers. Under KRS 186.190, a registration plate generally does not remain on a previously registered vehicle after ownership changes.
